Do I need a referral from my doctor to start physical therapy?
No, you do not need a referral to start physical therapy! Tennessee is a Direct Access and allows a licensed Physical Therapist to evaluate and treat clients without first seeing a physician. However, if you plan to submit your invoice for reimbursement from your insurance company, they may require you to have a physician referral. Each insurance plan is unique, so you will need to contact them to check.
